Hard goods are the products that arrive rigid: indoor and outdoor furniture, housewares and kitchenware, hand and power tools, sanitaryware and building fittings, sporting goods, structural toys, automotive accessories. Giftware and stationery round out the group. China's clusters for these run from Foshan's furniture belt to Yongkang's hardware workshops, and each brings its own failure modes.

Defects hard goods show most often

• Wood: splits, veneer bubbling, uneven staining and moisture too high for the destination climate
• Metal: weld spatter, sharp burrs, thin plating that rusts after one humid season
• Assembly: stripped threads, missing hardware kits, wobble under load on tables and chairs
• Finish: scratches, colour mismatch between components, paint that flakes at edges
• Packaging: missing foam corners, or cartons too thin for stacking in a mixed container

What the inspection focuses on

Inspectors assemble sampled units from the carton, exactly as a customer would, then load-test and function-test them against the specification. Materials are compared with the approved sample, moisture readings are taken on wooden parts, and hardware kits are counted screw by screw. Finally the packed carton is judged as a product in its own right, because transit damage is a quality defect like any other.

Why is packaging checked so carefully?

Hard goods travel stacked under thousands of kilograms of other cargo. A carton that passes at the factory and collapses at sea is the classic hard-goods loss, so drop-readiness, internal fit and desiccant use are inspected alongside the product — and container loading supervision verifies how the cartons are actually stowed.

Do inspectors test power tools on site?
